Take care of your employees, and they'll take care of your business."

Richard Branson

This week’s newsletter is inspired by one of my leaders, reflecting on my recent H1 performance reviews with my direct reports. This time of year, is my favorite because it reinforces three key leadership values:

  1. Connect as a TEAM

  2. Prioritise IMPACT

  3. Gain CLARITY

A Reflection on Leadership

When I first met this leader, I saw a reflection of my younger self from 2013-2016—energetic, passionate about the business, and eager to succeed.

However, I also recognised some traits that were holding them back and impacting their mental wellbeing.

This leader believed that success was tied to the hours spent in the store and the workload they carried. While there were underlying challenges, focusing on busy rather than impact prevented them from recognising the true obstacles.

Growth and Transformation

Over the past three months, this leader has made remarkable progress, overcoming challenges and shedding limiting beliefs. In our recent reviews, they expressed a pivotal focus for their development: prioritising themselves first.

I was filled with pride and excitement. While I can share my journey and the tools I used to overcome my own addiction to busyness, I recognise that leaders must navigate their own challenges to truly grow.

The Power of Self-Leadership

There’s immense power in leading and supporting yourself, which ultimately enhances how you lead and support others.

In today's fast-paced work environment, burnout is a real threat to productivity and employee retention.

A study by Gallup found that 76% of employees experience burnout on the job at least sometimes.

By prioritising employee wellbeing and creating a culture that values rest, leaders can significantly improve team performance, loyalty, and overall job satisfaction.

In my 15+ years leading people, I’ve recognised 4 common challenges leaders are faced with;

  1. Fear of decreased productivity if employees take time off

  2. Ingrained "hustle culture" mentality

  3. Lack of understanding about the importance of work-life

  4. Difficulty in changing long-standing organisational habits

Unfortunately, these challenges when not handled, then lead to some of the biggest mistakes you can make in leadership.

If you truly want to create a culture that values rest, wellbeing and aspirational leaders then you need to avoid these 5 traits that lead to burnout;

❌ Praising work while sick:
↳ Don't say: "Thank you for working even though you don't feel well."
↳ This sends the wrong message about your company's values.

❌ Neglecting feedback:
↳ Don't ignore employee feedback about workload and stress.

❌ Discouraging time off:
↳ Don't make employees feel guilty for taking breaks.

❌ Setting unrealistic goals:
↳ Don't set targets that will require overwork and sacrificing well-being.

❌ Promoting an "Always On" culture:
↳ Don't expect employees to be constantly available, especially during the late evenings, weekends and vacations.

And instead, focus on…

✅ Be a role model for taking time off:
↳ Lead by example.
↳ Share when you're taking time off and, if appropriate, share photos from your time off/holidays to normalise rest.

✅ Recognise efforts:
↳ Acknowledge team achievements and individual efforts in ways that promote wellbeing rather than appreciating health sacrifices.

✅ Encourage flexibility:
↳ Support diverse personal and professional needs with flexible work arrangements.

✅ Prevent post-holiday overload:
↳ Implement task delegation and workload management strategies to ensure team members return to a manageable workload.

✅ Conduct meaningful 1:1’s:
↳ Ensure one-on-one meetings are safe spaces for honest discussions about wellbeing and workload.

Let’s put the above into practice and create IMPACT… in just 4 days.

Day 1: Schedule your next day off and openly share your plans with your team.

Day 2: Conduct a one-on-one meeting with each team member, focusing on their wellbeing and workload.

Day 3: Implement one new policy or practice that promotes flexibility in your workplace.

Day 4: Review your team's goals and adjust any that may be promoting overwork or sacrificing wellbeing.

Day 5: Reply back to this email and let me know how this went for you!

Remember, true leadership isn't about your title—it's about how you treat your team.

By prioritising rest, respect, and wellbeing, you're not just creating a better workplace; you're fostering a culture where everyone can thrive.

As Richard Branson once said,

"Take care of your employees, and they'll take care of your business."

Lead with empathy, respect, and a commitment to wellbeing.
Until next Tuesday, keep blazing those trails!
